How to Submit a Master for DVD Replication

by admin on February 3, 2010

What are acceptable master formats?

a. We can accept masters authored to a DLT tape, DVD-R, USB
drive or external hard-drive. Any masters that have CSS encryption
should be submitted on a DLT tape or in a DDP 2.0 or 2.1 image file.
DDP image files must be PC accessible in order for our operating
systems to output a glass master. We would suggest that all our
clients submit at least 2 – 3 back up masters, preferably authored in
a different format from the original. This way if one master was to
fail, we will have 2 – 3 other options of recovery to avoid possible
manufacturing delays.

2. How should an 8.54 DL DVD [DVD-9] master be submitted?

a. Dual layer masters should preferably be submitted as a two
part master either on a DLT tape or DVD-R disc. Master should be
labeled as Layer 0 and 1. We can accept the master on a DL disc,
however there is a higher rate of glass mastering errors. In which
case we would suggest sending at least 2 – 3 back up masters.

3. How should a 17.08 A&B Sided DVD [DVD-10] master be submitted?

a. DVD-10 masters are also submitted as a two part master either
on a DLT tape or DVD-R disc as well. Masters should be labeled as
Layer 1 [Side A] and 2 [Side B].

4. Is there anything I should know when using DVD Studio Pro for
authoring?

a. When you are burning your DDP 2.0 or 2.1 image file there is
a check box for an item called Lossless Linking. Although this is just
an additional protection against burn buffering, it can cause a
potential problems for replication facilities. To ensure that we do
not encounter any problems we high suggest that “Lossless Linking” is
unchecked.
